China’s First Public Service Platform for 5G Self-Driving Unveiled in Chongqing

A simulated scenario of the self-driving car

Chongqing - January 16 saw the unveiling ceremony of the first public service platform for 5G self-driving application and demonstration in China. This platform stands in Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing. It will implement the 5G-based self-driving application and demonstration within the year.

Boost for self-driving technology

This platform will provide various services from basic development to operation for the test development of self-driving cars. The requirements for vehicles in driving data collecting, processing, and interactive control has become increasingly higher. Thus, 5G shows distinct merits when applied to automatic driving technology.

Liangjiang New Area is one of the pilot areas. It is the longest testing road and multifaceted evaluation process area in Chongqing. The road covers about 33.2 kilometers in total and includes over 30 base station infrastructures. Upon completion, 12 more infrastructures will be added. That will accommodate the commercial operation of self-driving vehicles in fully-opened road areas.

5G-V2X autonomous driving and innovation platform

On January 15, a cooperation agreement on 5G-V2X autonomous driving base and innovation platform were signed in Jiulongpo District, Chongqing. It will help Chongqing enhance the innovation in and accelerate the development of the intelligent and connected vehicles (ICV) industry.

V2X refers to the passing of information from a vehicle to any entity. V2X technology enables vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and infrastructure-to-infrastructure (I2I) communication. The main motivation is to obtain real-time road conditions and various traffic information including roads and pedestrians. It can ensure safer driving, less congestion, and efficient traffic.

V2X technology will be the core of unmanned driving technology in the future. 5G has the edges of high transmission rate, large access, and low delay. Therefore, the combination of both will create a millisecond network delay in vehicle slowdown and steering. The automatic driving will then be attainable.

On the same day, the Chongqing automatic driving road (Jiulongpo District) test was also officially launched.
