Canola Blossoms in 10 Different Colors

A makeshift suburb park located in Yufu Industrial Park, Liangjiang New Area of Chongqing has become a popular place recently.

People flocked to here for rapeseed blossoms, which are scattered among buildings and cover an area of nearly 66.67 hectares. Surprisingly, these flowers have unusual colors like red, white and pink, other than the common bright yellow. They constitute beautiful idyllic scenery in the bustling city.

Huang Taocui is famous in canola genetics and breeding in China. Her team successfully develops the well-known “Qingyou” series of rapeseed. The series has been planted in this country for roughly 5 million mu. “Qingyou 3” with its 49.96% oil content hits the record in China’s approved or registered winter rapeseed species. “Qingyou 8” has the oil content of over 50%.

“New species, once they succeed, can bring real benefit to farmers.” According to the Chongqing Academy of Agricultural Sciences, canola blossoms are the leading role of spring flower admiring in the city. With the active promotion, these colorful blossoms will stimulate another wave of economic growth in this field.

Chongqing now enjoys around 3.5 million mu (about 2333 km2) of canola, of which 100-thousand-mu flowers achieve integration of agriculture with tourism.

“Flower admiring will become an even more prosperous industry as time goes by. Moreover, after tackling problems relating to output and oil content, we can promote colorful canola to all planting bases concerned. By then, the economic and social benefits will be huge,” said the relevant person in charge.
