Chongqing Mayor Attended the Chongqing-Japan Economic and Trade Talkfest

On the morning of May 29, the Chongqing-Japan Economic and Trade conference was held in Tokyo, Japan. Tang Liangzhi, Vice Party Secretary and Mayor of Chongqing Municipal People’s Government, attended the meeting. Meanwhile, Zhang Zhikui, Director of Chongqing Commerce Commission, promoted Chongqing’s advantages and shared opportunities and prospect for cooperation.

There will be deeper cooperation between Chongqing and Japan

Mayor Tang represented Chongqing to express gratitude to entrepreneurs and friends who attended the conference. According to his speech, cooperation between Chongqing and Japan was of long standing, and he wished for further collaboration and improvement in this economic partnership.

Shoji Muneoka, Director and Chairman of Nippon Steel Corp., mentioned that Chongqing had achieved significant gains in China's Western Development and played an essential role in the construction of inland China. There is a deep friendship between Chongqing and Japan. In the meantime, he expected future cooperation between two peoples.

Koichi Miyata, Chairman of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), the representative of Japanese enterprises in Chongqing, shared stories of the successful experience and cooperation with Chongqing. "In recent years, Chongqing has vigorously promoted the transformation, upgrading and creative development of the automobile industry and promoted the urbanization construction by using big data and the artificial intelligence (AI) technology, maintaining a favorable overall development trend." To further strengthen Chongqing-Japan cooperation, SMBC will continue being committed to paving the way for the economic cooperation between the two sides.

Japanese entrepreneurs who participated in the meeting expressed their strong intentions to further expand their business layout in Chongqing. Kenichiro Yamanishi, Special Advisor to Mitsubishi Electric, said "(the company) was actively preparing for the 2nd Smart China Expo, and he hoped to strengthen cooperation with the government and enterprises of Chongqing (thus contributing to the further development of China-Japan relations)".
According to Masami Iijima, Chairman of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., "(the company) will inject more driving forces in Chongqing and create more values for the city with great potential for development".
Sono Kiyoshi, Chairman of MUFG Bank, Ltd., said, "Chongqing was an essential financial base in Central and Western China, which would continue to attract more Japanese enterprises and provide reliable solutions for Chongqing enterprises' financing and overseas expansion."
Shigeru Yamazoe, Vice-chairman of Marubeni Corporation, informed us he "looks forward to expanding cooperation with Chongqing in such fields as smart city, medical and health care, and big data, and to jointly expand the third-party market."

Cooperation and exchanges between Chongqing and Japan

Chongqing and Japan enjoy a long history of collaboration and exchanges. In recent years, the two sides have been expanding areas of cooperation, strengthening economic and trade exchanges and connectivity, deepening friendly relations, and continuously raising the level of collaboration. Chongqing is willing to take the opportunity of this meeting to build more platforms for communication, improve the communication mechanism of government services, carry out practical cooperation with Japanese enterprises in a broader field and at a deeper level, strengthen industrial synergy, and deepen cooperation in areas like intelligent manufacturing, new energy vehicles, robotics, and biomedicine.

The two sides will intensify economic and trade exchanges and expand trade in smart products, auto parts, and unique agricultural products. To promote technological innovation, Chongqing expects research and development institutions set up by Japanese enterprises to deepen talent exchanges, and it also supports the settlement of Japanese financial institutions for mutual benefit and win-win results at a higher level to strengthen economic cooperation. Friends from all walks of life in Japan are welcome to the 2nd Smart China Expo in Chongqing to experience its unique charm as a land of natural beauty and a city with cultural appeal and share the unlimited business opportunities brought by its open and innovative development.

The continuously deepening economic and trade cooperation between Chongqing and Japan make both two sides essential partners to each other. In 2018, Chongqing's total volume of imports and exports with Japan was RMB 22.38 billion, increasing by 15.5%, and the number of Japanese enterprises in the city reached 275, a large number of them, including SMBC, Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., have achieved excellent results in Chongqing.
