Insights: 5G Will Make Automatic Driving A Reality

By Xinyi Li, EDITOR

On June 5, the day before the opening of 2019 Chongqing International Auto Exhibition, China Auto Chongqing Summit 2019 was held in Yuelai International Convention Center. Heavyweights of the automobile industry attended the summit to share insights into the trend of the connected automated vehicle based on the techniques of 5G, UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle), new energy, and automatic driving safety.

5G Will Define China as the Pacesetter of Automatic Driving Technology

Zhang Junyni, the Managing Partner of Nio Capital, said that automated driving could cut the driver's required attention span in half. "The application of 5G technology plays an integral role in automated driving," said Zhang. In the future, the uses of 5G will be found everywhere, at home, in automated driving, and industry. “To be more advanced or influential than foreign countries in the future, China should take 5G into consideration.”

5G brings the applications ultra-low latency. Equipped with high-precision maps, a car can drive in lane without pulling excessively on the two conditions: The longitudinal precision is within 0.5 meters, and the horizontal accuracy is of centimeter-level; on more complex scenes like cities with dense buildings, canyons, and tunnels, the horizontal accuracy should be within 1 meter, and the longitudinal precision less than 50 centimeters.

Each UGV Should Bear an ID

What will be the future of UGV and how to identify it? Yu Tao, Founder, and CEO of Soda Technology indicated that each UGV should bear an ID. He said that it never equals the RFID chips license plates but the DNA of a car, borne by the vehicle after production. UGV will generate large amounts of data, including driving data and battery data, which are related to the value of the car, so the record of objective data is essential. UGV is data-driven; these data are of commercial importance and tradable.

He also said, as the cars become more intelligent and connected, the production and sales of Chinese or global vehicles will increase, and the categories will be further subdivided.

Four Benefits from Big Data

With today’s Big Data Intelligence, how do cars leverage big data to play a more significant role in driving, security, and road network collaboration?

At the forum, Wang Zhenpo, Director of China National Key Laboratory of Automobiles, said that the big data of new energy vehicles or automobile industry have developed from the rapid outbreak of single-point data to the digital integration of cross-border industries. He believed that the first step of big data cross-border integration is data sharing and data transparency. Data sharing enables cross-border integration and ensures the application of corresponding data in financial insurance, parking, charging, road transportation, and public transportation to guarantee the safety of driving.

Wang Zhenpo said that data delivers four benefits to users. Firstly, the vehicle information will be measurable, visible, and controllable. Meanwhile, integrating vehicle and road. Afterward, network data can facilitate the integration between information and business, and between technology and business. Finally, initiative services can be provided based on the integration and analysis of corresponding data.
