On July 26, Yuzhong District plans to renovate and upgrade Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, the No.1 Street in Western China, to build it into an appealing reception room for Chongqing. The focuses are traffic relief, consolidation, innovation, and upgrading.

Benefits from being a reform pilot site
In 1997, Chongqing built its first commercial pedestrian street — 1.2-square-kilometer Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, called the “Golden Cross Road.”
At the end of 2018, the place welcomed another development opportunity: it, as the only one in Chongqing, was selected in the first batch of national pedestrian street renovation and upgrading pilot sites. Benefiting from that, Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street received more support in capital, policies, and mechanisms.
During the first six months after being selected, the entire pedestrian street completed upgrading and renovation projects, introduced 25 brands’ flagship shops, and invested over 1 billion yuan in capacity-expansion and lights improvement of roads. As a result, it welcomes roughly 500 thousand visitors on average daily, and monthly revenue of essential shops reaches 1.6 billion yuan.
The first Adidas central outlet in Western China, the first McDonald’s concept outlet in new style and smart 5G experience hall of China Mobile settled themselves down in Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street. An International Coffee Cultural Festival and other high-quality promotion and marketing events were staged here. Luzu Temple historical feature area is under steady upgrading, and eight foreign brands will set their first outlets in China on the pedestrian street.

Improving with traffic relief, consolidation, innovation, and upgrading
Next, Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street will develop four theme avenues: Famous Brands, Fashion, Memory, and Art.
First, it will develop main and ancillary streets at the same time, to speed up construction of collective and efficient development space. The pedestrian street will extend to around 1.5 km long. Meanwhile, Wuyi Road, Datong Road, Qingnian Road and other roads, about 1,630 meters long in total, are under construction.
Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street will take the lead in establishing a 5G demonstration smart block in Chongqing. In response to that, it is building infrastructure base stations and transmission equipment, to cover the entire Jiefangbei CBD under 5G and public WiFi networks. Yuzhong District has been working with well-known enterprises, including China Telecom, Alibaba and Tencent, of which achievements, such as big data platform, consumption apps, and mobile payment equipment, will debut during Smart China Expo.

In addition, Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street will develop the first-shop economy, perfect street environment and utilize historical and cultural resources, to turn itself into a display of Thousand-year-old Mother Town, Memory of Chongqing. For example, it put efforts to promote Luzu Temple and Daijia Alley, which enjoy features of Bayu Culture and build two cultural tourism routes, which start from Jiefangbei CBD and end in Chaotianmen and Shibati Old Street respectively.
The Ceremony attracted heads of 100 enterprises and business associations, including president of business management department of EBA Beijing Investment Management Limited, CEO of the design department of Berton from Italy and representative from Chongqing office of Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). The signing ceremony witnessed the birth of cooperative agreements between Yuzhong District and 20 companies, such as EBA Beijing Investment Management Limited, Bertone, and Sinopec, which will invest nearly 1 billion yuan in related projects.
The investment is going to be used to develop high-end businesses like design colleges, luxury hotels, and bookstores. After completion, Yuzhong District will see a new business structure, and Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street will welcome new engines for upgrading. As a result, Jiefangbei CBD will be more fashionable, energetic, and international.
