China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) granted 5G licenses for commercial uses to China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) on June 6. Chongqing has managed to be listed in the first batch of national 5G demonstration pilot cities. Chongqing is also one of the two cities in which three basic telecommunications enterprises concurrently carry out 5G demonstrations and pilot project construction in Western China. Moreover, Chongqing's Communications Administration has actively organized relevant telecommunications enterprises to build the 5G network. This is done by focusing on the main commercial core areas, essential transportation hubs, cultural and tourist attractions, and critical universities to build 5G network demonstration areas.
As of now, 3,550 5G base stations have been opened across Chongqing, and a large-scale network has been built in Liangjiang New Area, Yuzhong District, Nan’an District, Wanzhou District, Fuling District, Changshou District, and Wulong District. Among them, China Telecom Chongqing Branch has achieved the continuous coverage of 5G in Jiefangbei (Yuzhong District), Xiantao International Big Data Valley (Yubei District), Lijia Smart Eco-City (Liangjiang New District), and Changshou Industrial Park and Gaoshuntang (Wanzhou District). It has also built a high-quality demonstration network at Zhongshan 4th Ring Road and Xingguang 5th Ring Road. China Mobile Chongqing Branch has achieved the coverage of 5G in business areas such as Guanyinqiao, well-known scenic spots such as Hongyadong and Yangtze River Cableway, Chongqingxi Railway Station, and some rail traffic lines. China Unicom Chongqing Branch has completed 5G continuous coverage on Nanbin Road and the surrounding areas of Zhaomu Mountain, as well as coverage in some scenic spots in Wulong Fairy Mountain, Yunyang Longgang National Geological Park, Zhuoshui Ancient Town (Qianjiang District), Hechuan Fishing Town and Yangtze River and Jialing River Tours.
The gradual advancement of 5G network construction has laid a foundation for 5G to be accessible to all citizens. On July 30, Chongqing Mobile officially released the first batch of 5G mobile phone numbers. Starting with 198 and ended with 2331, 20 Chongqing citizens became the first batch of 5G mobile phone experiencers free of charge. On Chongqing Mobile’s heels, Chongqing Telecom also launched a 5G experience user recruitment program, inviting users to experience 5G freely.
According to the schedule, Chongqing Mobile will achieve the first commercial uses of 5G network by this September and will announce its 5G service schemes. Chongqing Telecom and Chongqing Unicom will release their 5G mobile phone numbers in Chongqing next month. By then, more people can feel the lightning-fast speed of the 5G network when making calls, watching HD webcast, and playing lag-free mobile games.
