International Internet Data Channel Linking Chongqing and Singapore Goes into Service

By Rui Hu, Editor

Opening Ceremony of China-Singapore (Chongqing) Dedicated Channel on International Internet Data (IDC) kicked off on the morning of September 11 in Singapore. Five operators and ten users from the two countries signed 12 cooperation agreements. What is IDC? What significant role does it play?

Data transmits from Chongqing through Guangzhou and Hong Kong to Singapore via the channel with a total data capacity of 260Gbps

IDC is a vital member of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity and an essential fruit of bilateral cooperation in telecommunication.

Additionally, it is China’s first point-to-point international data channel with another country. China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom team up with Singtel and StarHub from Singapore to develop and operate this Chongqing-Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Singapore data link.

Construction of IDC was approved in February 2019. The launch is a result of the joint efforts of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China, the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee, Chongqing Municipal People’s Government, and Ministry of Trade & Industry and Ministry of Communications and Information of Singapore, other related departments and the five above-mentioned operators.

IDC features the bandwidth of 260Gbps; latency is about 70-80ms, and packet loss is no higher than 0.5%, which is 75% and 80% lower than the Internet respectively. Therefore, IDC is expected to offer better network experience than the Internet.

14 Chinese and Singapore leading companies have begun cooperation

Safe data exchange and fast interaction are going to facilitate extensive bilateral cooperation in fields such as telemedicine, distance education, smart tourism, smart logistics, ultra HD video transmission, and cross-border e-commerce. Moreover, enterprises in the two countries will realize deep integration in cooperative design and R&D, data processing, remote detection, etc.

During the 2019 Smart China Expo that closed lately, the joint debugging for the IDC was conducted. It quickly attracted 14 leading enterprises of China and Singapore, including Tencent, GDS, Listen Data, Customer Insight Research, Chongqing Haifu Medical Technology Co., Ltd., Yidu Cloud, Mobvista, Jinvovo Technology, DeaKing Technology, National Cancer Centre Singapore, Singapore Roulian Technology, Tailai Supply Chain (Singapore), Singapore Innoe International Pte. Ltd. and Farrer Park Hospital. Besides, smart application demonstration projects have been launched in such fields as telemedicine, distance education, ultra-high-definition (UHD) videos, and smart education.

Based on the IDC, doctors from China and Singapore can carry out remote consultation, guide the operation remotely through the intelligent big data medical service platform and monitor the running state of Haifu Knife to improve the medical service level of focused ultrasound ablation surgery.

Relying on the IDC, medical experts of China and Singapore can carry out remote consultation and surgery to provide patients with better medical services as soon as possible. Chongqing Haifu Medical Technology Co., Ltd. and Farrer Park Hospital will realize safe matchmaking of Singapore and Chongqing Haifu Global Remote Big Data Center by the IDC. Based on the IDC, doctors from China and Singapore can carry out remote consultation, guide the operation remotely through the intelligent big data medical service platform and monitor the running state of Haifu Knife to improve the medical service level of focused ultrasound ablation surgery. In the future, Chongqing Haifu Medical Technology Co., Ltd. will also cooperate with Singapore’s Hifutech and promote Haifu Knife in Singapore and Southeast Asia to facilitate the networking process of focused ultrasound ablation surgery.

In the field of distance education, China and Singapore can conduct remote academic exchanges, real-time teaching and sharing of course resources, and accomplish transnational learning tasks through VR/AR technology. Jinvovo Technology, the National University of Singapore and Singapore Innoe International Pte. Ltd. are jointly carrying out training and cultivation of commercial big data analysis talent and joint research and development of commercial big data analysis application and blockchain technology.

In the field of data center services, GDS will take advantage of the IDC to provide cloud connectivity services and inter-connectivity services within the data center for large Internet companies, financial institutions, telecommunications and IT service providers, as well as large domestic enterprises and multinational companies,  to achieve efficient and convenient network connectivity.

In the field of technology R&D, based on the IDC, Listen Data and Singapore Roulian Technology are jointly designing a new smart city collaborative management platform while Customer Insight Research is cooperating with Tailai Supply Chain (Singapore) to develop and test the intelligent digital platform of international trade logistics.

Moreover, the IDC could also offer safe, reliable, stable and smooth 4K/8K UHD videos and provide immersive “face-to-face” communication experience for transnational meetings, business negotiations and collaborative office work between Chinese and Singapore enterprises.
