Roundtable on Chongqing's Foreign Business Environment by Chongqing's Foreign Business Representatives

By XIAO WUDENG ZHANG|Jan 13,2020

Chongqing - The 2020 Chongqing Government Work Report has been freshly released, which reviews the city’s achievements and challenges of the past year and outlines goals and tasks for 2020.

From the work report, the target of “speed(ing) up the construction of opening – up in inland China, and work(ing) hard to lead opening – up in the western region”  stands out among the highlights. The government report promises to create a market-oriented and law-based international business environment, which will keep in line with the World Bank’s evaluation index system to continuously improve the business environment.

As China, especially its major cities, takes great efforts to open up and bring in more foreign business, a lot of foreign companies are looking to tap into the massive Chinese market.

So how can China attract more FDI to Chongqing? What do the foreign corporations here think about Chongqing’s foreign business environment? Is it an attractive place to be?

Today, we are joined by three distinguished guests in our news studio, to have a free discussion on the above issues. They are Sharon Fraser, the General Manager of Crowne Plaza Jiefangbei Chongqing and board member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Southwest China, Du Guoyu, Co-Founder of UKDE Limited, former chief representative of China-Britain Business Council in Chongqing,  and James Wemyss, the Director of Strategy and Business Development of Stone Tan Finance, the committee member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Southwest China.

The discussion touches upon topics including the changes to Chongqing's foreign business environment, suggestions on how to match the international business environment standards, the most urgent issue that needs to be addressed to develop a better foreign business environment, and what facilities Chongqing has provided for the foreign business. The three guests also shared their insights on Chongqing's potential to build itself into an international consumption center.
