On January 21, Sun went to the respiratory department of the People's Hospital of Xiushan County for cough and other symptoms. According to Cui Surong, the director of the respiratory department of the hospital, Sun's reflections and symptoms were in line with 2019-nCoV.
On January 23, Sun was diagnosed with 2019-nCoV and entered an isolation ward for treatment. "I saw the news before and knew about the disease, but I never considered that I would get it. I said that I was not worried or that it was fake." Sun said that in addition to himself, he is more worried about his family.
At the time, he was extremely depressed.
Sun, holding flowers, was cured after ten days of treatment.
They always talked to him about his daughter to encourage him and keep an active mentality. On the Spring Festival Eve, the hospital carefully prepared a special meal. At night, Sun had a special family dinner with family via a video call.

However, after a few days' treatments, Sun did not get better. His condition had begun to worsen. The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing University led the expert team from Qianjiang to Xiushan. With years of experience, experts believed that Sun was a severe case and needed to adjust his treatment plan. At that time, eight members of the expert group immediately consulted, and after nearly two hours of discussion, a new treatment plan was formulated. Based on meticulous bedside observation and analysis, the first change was the way Sun inhaled oxygen. They changed his mask type, used new antiviral drugs, and added symptomatic treatment with Chinese medicine.
