Chongqing COVID-19 Update: 296 Confirmed Cases Hospitalized, Logistics Enterprises Encouraged to Resume Production

  • The overall confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 74,185 by the end of February 18. A total of 2,004 people have died of COVID-19, and altogether 14,376 people have been discharged from hospital after recovery.

Chongqing- As of 24:00 local time on February 18, Chongqing had reported 296 confirmed cases currently hospitalized (36 in severe condition and 13 in critical condition), five deaths, and 225 discharged patients after recovery, according to the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission Wednesday. All those cases had totaled 553 confirmed cases infected by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as of the end of Monday in Chongqing.

A total of 22,527 people who had close contacts with COVID-19 patients have been traced, 19,335 people have been released from medical observation, and 3,192 people are under medical observation.

12th medical team headed to Hubei Province

The twelfth Chongqing municipal medical team of 145 members, 25 doctors, and 120 nurses departed on Tuesday to support Hubei Province. As of now, a total of twelve medical teams and 964 members, military staff excluded, have arrived in Hubei, and 612 members of seven teams in Wuhan to fight against the COVID-19.

The youngest patient in Chongqing discharged from the hospital

According to the Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital, a 7-month-old baby girl, the youngest COVID-19 patient in Chongqing was discharged from the hospital after recovery, together with her mother on Wednesday. The mother and the child had been successively diagnosed with the disease. The hospital set up a dedicated medical team to carry out individualized treatment.

Logistics enterprises encouraged to resume operation

Chongqing is encouraging logistics enterprises to resume production and work as soon as possible; and offering a series of incentive policies., according to Tuesday's press conference on epidemic prevention and control.  For example, during the epidemic period, foreign trade goods transported through the China Railway Express (Chongqing) to Europe, as well as rail-rail and rail-water intermodal transport of the International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC) are subject to a 30% reduction in freight rate (free of charge for the accepted donated goods).  As of February 17, the freight train between China and Europe had made 139 trip and 123 cross-border highway shuttles.

Wang Jing, director of the Port and Logistics Office, Chongqing Municipal People's Government, said that since the epidemic outbreak, the office has responded quickly and focused on transport security.  The office has organized related logistics companies to dispatch vehicles, storage, and other facilities as soon as possible. More than 100 logistics companies have a part of the effort.

At present, the large-scale IT production enterprises in Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Area, Lianglu Cuntan Bonded Port Area, and their supporting logistics providers have resumed production and work. As of February 17, more than 30 enterprises in Xiyong Microelectronics Park operated with over 5,000 employees on duty that day.

A total of 14,376 people had been discharged from the hospital after recovery. By the end of Tuesday, 62 confirmed cases, including one death had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 10 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 22 in Taiwan, including one death. Four patients in Hong Kong, five in Macao, and two in Taiwan have been discharged from the hospital after recovery.

Aerosol transmission is possible if anyone is exposed to a high concentration of aerosol in a relatively closed environment for a long time, according to the latest diagnosis and treatment plan (trial) jointly issued on Tuesday by the General Office of the National Health Commission and the Office of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Moreover, respiratory droplets and close contact transmission are the main routes of transmission.

According to Xinhua news, renowned Chinese respiratory specialist Zhong Nanshan on Tuesday highlighted the studies on traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) in the fight against novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Speaking at a press conference held in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, Zhong said the herbal prescription called "Pneumonia No. 1" applied on January 23 had proved effective in the treatment of COVID-19 patients in the province.
