COVID-19 Update: China’s Health Authority Calls for Int’l Cooperation

  • There were 2,241,359 confirmed cases (81,153 new) globally, and 152,551 people (6,463 new) have lost their lives by 10:00 CET April 19, according to the daily COVID-19 situation report released by the World Health Organization.

Ma Xiaowei, the minister in charge of the National Health Commission, made the call at the Group of 20 (G20) health ministers virtual meeting Sunday evening. Ma said China is willing to implement the consensus reached the Extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit on COVID-19, and calls on all parties to continue supporting WHO's leading role in coordinating international cooperation against COVID-19. The official also called for joint efforts to provide help to countries with vulnerable health systems.

There were 2,241,359 confirmed cases (81,153 new) globally, and 152,551 people (6,463 new) have lost their lives by 10:00 CET April 19, according to the daily COVID-19 situation report released by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the report, no new country/territory/area reported cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

The Chinese mainland reported 12 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 Sunday, according to the National Health Commission (NHC) April 20. And eight of them were imported cases, bringing the total number of its kind to 1,583. Also, on Sunday, 49 new asymptomatic COVID-19 cases were reported on the mainland. At the same time, no one was confirmed of being infected with the virus, and 58 were discharged from medical observation, according to the NHC. A total of 990 asymptomatic-infected patients were still under medical observation. The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 82,747 by the end of Sunday, including 1,031 patients who were still being treated, altogether 77,084 patients who had been discharged after recovery, and 4,632 people who died of the disease.

By Sunday, altogether 1,025 confirmed cases, including four deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 45 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 420 in Taiwan, including six deaths. A total of 602 patients in Hong Kong, 20 in Macao, and 189 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
