COVID-19 Update: Chinese Mainland Now Has Less Than 1,000 Confirmed COVID-19 Cases

  • There were 2,471,136 confirmed cases (73,920 new) globally, and 169,006 people (6,058 new) have lost their lives by 10:00 CEST April 22, according to the daily COVID-19 situation report released by the World Health Organization.
  • The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland decreased to 959 on Wednesday, the first time below 1,000. The Chinese mainland reported ten newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, according to the National Health Commission on April 23.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland decreased to 959 on Wednesday, the first time below 1,000, according to the National Health Commission (NHC) April 23. The Chinese mainland reported ten newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 Wednesday. And six of them were imported cases, bringing the total number of its kind to 1,616. Also, on Wednesday, 27 new asymptomatic COVID-19 cases were reported on the mainland, while three were confirmed of being infected with the virus, and 31 were discharged from medical observation, according to the NHC. A total of 984 asymptomatic-infected patients were still under medical observation. The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 82,798 by the end of Wednesday, including 959 patients who were still being treated, altogether 77,207 patients who had been discharged after recovery, and 4,632 people who died of the disease.

By Wednesday, 1,033 confirmed cases, including four deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 45 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 426 in Taiwan, including six deaths. A total of 678 patients in Hong Kong, 26 in Macao, and 236 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.

Xinhua reported that Chinese Internet giants Alibaba Group, JD.com, and Tencent have launched booking services for COVID-19 tests. Ali Health, Alibaba's health care subsidiary, has offered testing appointments in 10 cities, including Shanghai and Beijing starting from April 21. It will extend the service in 28 more cities this week. Users searching for "coronavirus nucleic acid test" in Taobao, Alibaba's main e-commerce site, will be directed to a page offering booking services. JD Health, JD.com's health care subsidiary, and WeChat, Tencent's social media platform, also launched similar booking platforms for COVID-19 tests in Beijing, Guangzhou, and other cities. The services have been launched as China accelerates COVID-19 nucleic acid testing to promote epidemic prevention and control and speed up the resumption of production.
