Chongqing held a city-wide economic work conference to summarize the year's economic work, analyze the current economic situation, and clarify the city's economic work's key tasks next year on December 29, 2020.

It was pointed out that since the beginning of 2020, in the face of the unexpected COVID-19 outbreak and the profound and complex changes domestically and worldwide, Chongqing has resolutely implemented the decisions and plans of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and actively joined the fight against the epidemic. As a result, significant outcomes have been achieved in various aspects of work. The economic recovery develops faster than expected; the new driving force for development grows stronger; breakthroughs are made in reform and opening up, and people's lives continue to improve.
The conference highlighted the need to "make every effort to promote the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, and prepare a high-quality outline for the 14th Five-Year Plan". Dong Jianguo, Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group and Director of the Chongqing Development and Reform Commission said that the Commission would carry out the smooth establishment of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, and comprehensively prompt the enactment of the "Outline of Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle Construction Plan" and the city's implementation plan.
"More vigorously promoting scientific and technological innovation" was also one of the conference's key issues. This inspired Chen Jun, Deputy Director of the Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau. He said that the Bureau would propel the construction of the Western (Chongqing) Science City and Liangjiang Collaborative Innovation Zone, enhance the city's scientific and technological strength, and cultivate more innovative talents, to bolster the construction of a scientific and technological innovation center with national influence and the ability to develop the economy in high quality.
Wang Yuxiang, Secretary of the CPC Committee and Chairman of Chongqing Machinery & Electronics Holding (Group) Co., Ltd. (CME), made a statement about accelerating the optimization and upgrade of the industry and supply chain. He said that the CME would focus on the industry chains of clean energy, intelligent manufacturing, and electronic information to boost the upgrade and transformation with major industrial projects and lead the high-quality development of Chongqing's equipment manufacturing industry.
The conference received positive responses from districts, counties, departments, and enterprises in Chongqing. They all resolved that in line with the conference's spirit and aim, they will make concerted efforts to drive Chongqing's high-quality development and ensure a good start of the 14th Five-Year Plan.
