China Continues Medical Support for Papua New Guinea

Chongqing- Ten medical team members from the 11th China Medical Team to Papua New Guinea set off from Chongqing Municipality in southwestern China on March 9, according to a press conference held by the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission.

The 11th China Medical Team to Papua New Guinea is composed of clinical experts of tertiary first-class hospitals in Chongqing. The average age of the team members is 39 years old, includes two doctorates and five masters specializing in urology, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiovascular medicine, oncology, neurosurgery and neonatology.

The medical team will serve in Papua New Guinea for one year, providing medical services to local people, and extensive training to their peers at Port Moresby General Hospital. This hospital is the largest and highest-level national public hospital in Papua New Guinea with teaching, scientific research and clinical functions.

Furthermore, a traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture and massage expert has also been included in the medical team on this occasion. Traditional acupuncture and massage have their unique curative effects in the treatment of chronic pain and sports injuries. Additionally, the medical team is staffed with a translator and a chef.

Throughout the past 19 years, China Medical Teams have played a significant role as clinical experts at the Port Moresby General Hospital. Successive medical team members have applied a number of new technologies in recipient hospital, producing many “firsts” in the history of medicine and health care in Papua New Guinea, and making contributions to the clinical medical technology locally.

Once the China Medical Team arrive in Papua New Guinea, they will continue to help and improve the overall level of medical practice and service capabilities of the recipient country. Meanwhile, the medical team will also provide medical services to Chinese-funded institutions and overseas Chinese citizens.
