Chongqing's laptop output has topped the world for seven consecutive years, according to the Chongqing Economic and Information Technology Commission on March 19. The electronic information industry has constituted the "first driving force" for Chongqing's industrial growth.
Chongqing's laptop output was reported to hit a new high last year, exceeding 70 million units.
Under the COVID-19 pandemic, the emerging stay-at-home economy stimulated the demand for laptops worldwide. In addition to the record-breaking output, Chongqing's laptop industry's output value topped 300 billion yuan (about 46.09 billion U.S. dollars) for the first time.
Chongqing has gathered three HP, Acer, and ASUS brands, together with six host manufacturers of Foxconn, Quanta, Inventec, Compal, Wistron, and Pegatron. The collection of production orders from almost all laptop brands, including Dell, Toshiba, Sony, Apple, and Xiaomi, has permitted strong synergies. Since 2014, Chongqing's laptop output has been ranked first globally, accounting for about 30% of the total.
In addition, Chongqing's electronic information has also boomed. In 2020, the added value of electronic information went up by 13.9% year on year, mushrooming into the "first driving force" for Chongqing's industrial growth. Now, Chongqing is home to 639 electronic information enterprises above designated size, with the country's main business income ranking seventh.
Through optimizing the supply chain of electronic information, Chongqing has established a full-process integrated circuit system of "IC design — wafer manufacturing — packaging and testing — supporting the supply of raw materials" and an intelligent terminal industry chain involving operators brands, foundries, and supporting manufacturers. Of Chongqing's electronic information industry, the complete computer machines and supporting industries constitute 51.7%. Mobile phones and supporting industries take up 19%, and other electronic industries like electronic core components and smart meters make up 29.3%. In this way, an industrial structure where diverse industries mushroom in different ways has taken initial shape.
