On the night of November 30, 1949, the vanguard troops of the People's Liberation Army entered downtown Chongqing through Chaotianmen, Chuqimen, etc., and liberated Chongqing.
On December 1, 1949, crowds of people poured into the street. When they saw the red five-star flag flying on the top of the People's Liberation Monument, tears welled up in everyone's eyes.
This national first-class cultural relic is now collected at Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum as the witness of that period of remarkable history.
How did the red five-star flag be made? What is it made of?
Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, a national patriotic education base, and a national first-grade museum clearly demonstrated the history of Chongqing with valuable cultural relics.
"This is the first red five-star flag rising in Chongqing after liberation. It was made of a red silk quilt cover and yellow paper." Gao Jie, the docent, pointed to a neatly folded and faded red flag with rough stitching in a showcase.
Former Chongqing Museum collected the flag from Liang Chengdong, a teacher at Yucai School when it found out in 1980 that he had the treasure.
Luo Renshi, an alumnus of the school, wrote in A Red Flag of the Mountain City that the students and faculty of Yucai School determined to make a national flag in November 1949, before the People's Liberation Army came. Liang Chengdong offered a large red silk quilt cover, and Zhao Yixi and Su Yongjing, also teachers of Yucai School, made the national flag referring to the size published on The Masses.
They spread the silk on the ground, and Su Yongjing lay on the ground to stitch it. Teachers and students stood around. This moment was so great and impressive that Luo's eyes were filled with tears.
On December 1, 1949, the students and faculty of Yucai School, Society University, and Hongyan Elementary School held the self-made red five-star flag high and led the parade to welcome the People's Liberation Army.
They started from Hongyan Village, passed through Xiaoshizi, and erected the first national flag of Chongqing on the People's Liberation Momentum.
