Italian Design Day 2022 Highlights Sustainable Urban Regeneration

Chongqing - 2022 Italian Design Day (IDD), themed on "Technology for Sustainable Urban Regeneration," took place in Jiulong Ecool, a cultural park in the Jiulongpo District, on May 24.

The IDD is an initiative promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, together with all the Italian Embassies, Consulates, and Cultural Institutes worldwide. The Italian Design Day features events celebrating Italian design and its creativity and innovation potential in different fields. The Italian Design Ambassador, appointed by the Italian Design Day Expert Committee, will show the high-quality Italian designs to more than 100 cities worldwide.

Guido Bilancini, the Consul General of Italy in Chongqing, made the opening speech, "Design and other industries are facing social challenges, such as climate change. The solution is to promote lifestyle changes in concepts and practices, with combined social welfare and sustainability, low environmental impact, and recycling."

Architects, engineers, and interior designers will play key roles in driving these shifts," added Guido Bilancini.

Wu Guanglong, general manager of CHINA MERCHANTS SHEKOU HOLDINGS Industrial Park Business Department Chongqing Corporation, attended the event and said that this year's theme would focus on the sustainability of the community's buildings and the adaptation of existing buildings through the micro-renovations.

Architect Massimo Bagnasco - partner and managing director of Progetto CMR (Beijing) Architectural Design Consultants Co., Ltd - presented a report on sustainable development based on the combination of geomorphic features, local culture, and ecological development.

The event also invited Xie Hui, Deputy Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing University, to focus on the challenges of human settlements under climate change by citing related cases, and shared cutting-edge design research.

Afterward, a roundtable was held, which was attended by Dr. Paolo Vincenzo Genovese (online), distinguished Professor of the Faculty of Architectural Engineering of the University of Zhejiang, Mr. Liu DiQiu, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Art and Design of Chongqing Jiaotong University, Mr. Tian Jinli, Director of Jiulong Ecool, Mr. Gan Chun, Founder of the Jingluo Creativity Campaign. All the speakers were able to share their views on the salient issues, ranging from urban renewal, digital art and media, and sustainable development, and showed the opportunity for cooperation from the point of view of cutting-edge urban planning to Chinese and Italian companies.
