Railway Wagon “Equipment Doctors” Rise to the Hot Weather Challenge

Chongqing- A group of "equipment doctors" were sweating to carry out routine maintenance for the truck depot every summer at the Chongqing West section of China Railway Chengdu Bureau Group Co., Ltd.

A wagon depot is where railway wagons are routinely inspected and refurbished, similar to a 4S shop (one dealership for car sales, maintenance, spare parts, and information services) for trucks, including vehicle sales and spare sales parts, after-sales service, and information.

Without refurbishment, accessories threaten to fall off the truck, which will spoil the normal loading of goods and cause significant failures.

"Wagon 4S store" equipment maintenance involves a two-week refurbishment of the leading service shop's equipment, ensuring regular operation for the truck in the second half of the year.

With continuous hot weather in Chongqing this year, the high temperature in the enclosed workshop is even more unbearable. Renovations are usually conducted in harsh environments, such as heights and pits, so maintenance becomes even more challenging.

It is not difficult to imagine how hot there is when the welding rod clamped by the welding tongs in a technician's hands touches the car body, with bursting sparks and evaporating heat waves.

"Equipment is rigid, while humans are flexible," said Chen Lijun, a technician in the equipment workshop. We need to be flexible during the refurbishment, using smooth skills rather than brute force."

Chen is not only the overall leader of the annual equipment refurbishment project but also an excellent instructor who always looks to cultivate young people during this project.

During this year's COVID-19 pandemic, equipment refurbishment again fell victim to a shortage of staff and skills. Chen immediately organized the team members so that the refurbishment tasks would not be compromised.

"The weather is hot, so everyone should pay attention to avoid heatstroke," Chen shouted to his team.

Every day, the volunteer service team will provide logistical support on time, delivering refreshing drinks and heatstroke prevention medicines.

So far, nearly 80% of the overall task has been completed. The "health index" of the wagon 4S shop keeps improving as progress proceeds smoothly and orderly.
