Chongqing Gains 50.3% Economic Growth from the Tertiary Industry

Chongqing's GDP reached 693.289 billion yuan (about USD 100.57 billion) in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 4.7% year-on-year, according to the latest economic and social development performance released at the press conference on April 20.

Among them, the added value of the primary industry, including agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery, was 31.878 billion yuan (about USD 4.624 billion), an increase of 3.8%.

The added value of the secondary industry, including mining, manufacturing, production, and supply of electricity, gas and water, and construction, was 259.015 billion yuan (about USD 53.57 billion), an increase of 5.8%.

The added value of the tertiary industry was 402.396 billion yuan (about USD 58.37 billion), an increase of 4.1%, spanning transportation, warehousing, postal services, information transmission, computer services and software, wholesale and retail, accommodation and catering, finance, real estate, and other services.

The tertiary industry contributes 50.3% to the city's economic growth, with the number of employees in the tertiary sector reaching 1,425,300 above the designated size in the city by the end of March.

 "Chongqing's services sector in the first quarter was characterized by growth in business revenue and profit, faster recovery of industries, intensified investment, good employment situation, and more new growth drivers," said Wang Ge, Director of the Service Industry Division of Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Statistics.

Li Chuan, Director of the Trade Division of Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, said that the demand for intelligent and green consumption was gradually increasing, a prominent trend in the city's consumption industry in the first quarter. In particular, there was an increase of 46.9% in the retail sales of new energy vehicles.

According to the Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, Chongqing highlighted the work of ensuring stable growth, employment, and prices in the first quarter. The production demand recovered steadily, the employment and prices remained stable overall, the residents' income continued to increase, and the economic operation achieved a good start.

The total retail sales of consumer goods reached 368.669 billion yuan (about USD 53.48 billion), a year-on-year increase of 4.7%, up five percentage points from the previous year.

Among them, the retail sales of urban consumer goods were 314.686 billion yuan (about USD 45.65 billion), an increase of 3.9%. Retail sales of rural consumer goods amounted to 53.983 billion yuan (about USD 7.83 billion), an increase of 10.2%. 

Next, Chongqing will continue to promote the development of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, focusing on accelerating the construction of modern infrastructure networks and science and technology innovation centers and striving to achieve 28% of the manufacturing industry, more than 50% of the added value of the digital economy, and an average annual increase of more than 10% in R&D investment by 2027.
