Consumer Goods Industry as Main Sector for New Technologies Application | Insights

Chongqing - Chongqing's digital development index of the consumer goods industry reached 125.8, higher than the national average of 103.8, according to the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology.

With 28 sub-indicators, the index mainly involves four dimensions, including digital foundation, management, production, and green coordinated development, explained Luo Li, deputy director of the commission.

From the index, the digital foundation of Chongqing's consumer goods industry is ahead of the national average regarding equipment automation, digitalization level, and information system application.

However, most enterprises still have shortcomings in digital infrastructure, such as the coverage of information systems to businesses. For example, clothing and apparel manufacturing firms lack connectivity between equipment and technique due to the small production scale.

Digital consumption will become the future

The Strategic Summit of the Consumer Goods Industry in Increasing Variety, Improving Quality, and Creating Brand was held in Chongqing on May 5, where experts shared views to support the industry.

The summit aims to promote the intellectual, green, and high-end development of the consumer goods industry, build a modern industrial system for the consumer goods industry, and promote the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.

Although the consumer goods industry is somehow traditional, it is also an important testing ground and main sector of new technologies application, said Tan Jianrong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Tan continued, "In industrial policy; it is necessary to speed up upgrading consumer goods quality standards and certification systems. We should also focus on innovative research and technological upgrading, strengthening the ability to provide quality goods and services."

New consumption scenarios and marketing methods are constantly emerging with the booming Internet economy. Experts said that developing digital consumption will become the future trend of the consumer goods industry.
