Chongqing - A groundbreaking concept called “Laborer Homes” is shining brightly in Chongqing. These unique spaces offer rest and warmth to a diverse group of individuals, including sanitation workers, couriers, night shift laborers, and patrol teams.
Recently, ten new Laborer Homes have been inaugurated in Chongqing’s Jiulongpo District, adding a touch of warmth to urban life.
Each Laborer Home has amenities like air conditioning, refrigerators, and water dispensers. Xiao Shuping, a sanitation worker whose day involves navigating the city’s streets and alleys, expressed that she finds solace in these increasingly refined havens; they serve as her second home outdoors.

Innovative techs behind convenience enhancement
Many Laborer Homes are strategically located in old residential areas, significantly enhancing the convenience of citizens’ lives.
For example, within the Chenjiaping U-Show City urban service station, this Laborer Home was concurrently constructed with the public toilets of Chenjiaping U-Show City, utilizing innovative prefabricated construction techniques and eco-friendly building materials for the first time.
Prefabricated construction uses components made off-site in a factory, which are transported and put together on-site to create a structure. This approach ensures high construction efficiency, minimal pollution, and maximum mitigation of the impact on the surrounding environment.
“Across the street is the Chenjiaping Bus Station, adjacent to the U-Show City Mall and public bus stop, with a vast expanse of old residential housing behind,” said Luo Wenliang, the head of the sanitation facilities department of Jiulongpo District Urban Administration Bureau. “Given the significant demand for restroom facilities in this area, we planned and built this city service station here.”
At the entrance of the Chenjiaping U-Show City urban service station, one can observe an electronic screen on the wall displaying real-time status updates, video surveillance, and data information such as temperature, humidity, and illumination of the public toilets.
Luo highlights the smart monitoring systems installed in these public restrooms. These systems utilize the internet, cloud computing, and network transmission technologies to monitor air quality, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, PM 2.5 levels, temperature, humidity, and more, ensuring optimal conditions and aiding in efficient management.

Over 80% of eco-friendly materials are recyclable
Given the high frequency of usage for both public toilets and the Laborer Home, the Chenjiaping U-Show City urban service station utilizes eco-friendly materials, with over 80% being recyclable.
The station has introduced a “triple ventilation system,” incorporating natural ventilation through windows, along with negative pressure exhaust systems in the ceiling and toilet stalls. This ensures odor-free interiors and minimizes the impact on the surrounding environment as much as possible.
As part of its commitment to urban welfare, the Chongqing municipal government aims to establish 150 Laborer Home demonstration points this year. These havens are more than just functional facilities.
They symbolize the city’s unspoken care and respect for its workers. In Chongqing, every person working and living outdoors can find a warm home, making even the coldest winters feel welcoming and warm.
