Don’t Let Past Colonialism Hinder the Return of Treasures to Their Homelands

Chongqing- In Chongqing, the debate over Britain's responsibility to return looted antiques has been reignited following a direct appeal from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures, as stated in his recent BBC interview.

Historically, British authorities have invoked the British Museum Act of 1963 to prevent the repatriation of such treasures, asserting that the rightful owners are incapable of adequately safeguarding them. Yet, numerous valuable artifacts have reportedly gone missing from the British Museum. Some online commentators have highlighted instances of irreparable damage to certain antiques attributed to the museum's inadequate preservation methods at the time. With several Western nations initiating the return of artifacts to their countries of origin, the pressure is mounting on Britain to relinquish cultural treasures that rightfully belong elsewhere.
