Innovation, Multilingualism Drive Growth in Emerging Economies | Insights

Chongqing - In recent years, emerging economies have experienced rapid growth, particularly in the digital economy, intelligent manufacturing, and green energy sectors.

China, as the world's largest emerging economy, leads in transforming its economic structure with a focus on innovation-driven development, said Professor Ou Ling of Chongqing University in an exclusive interview with Bridging News during the "Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Youth" Asia Youth Dialogue event on June 14.

This shift has been especially evident in China's transition from traditional manufacturing to high-tech industries. Professor Ou said notable strides have been made in new materials, biotechnology, and new energy vehicles, which are also developing rapidly.

For example, "Made in Chongqing" intelligent networked NEVs symbolize the city's industrial prowess. Projects like the Changan Yubei new factory and Seres' Super Factory are operational, producing 56 types of key assemblies for these vehicles locally.

Statistics show that in 2023, Chongqing's automobile production reached 2.32 million units, ranking second in the country. Of this total, NEVs accounted for over 500,000 units.

Additionally, in the field of electronic information manufacturing, Chongqing produced 70.631 million notebook computers in 2023, maintaining its position as the world's top producer for ten consecutive years. The annual output of power semiconductors exceeded 2 million pieces, ranking among the top three in the country.

Professor Ou emphasized that education is crucial for developing innovative abilities and international perspectives. She noted that language skills are a key area for young people to focus on.

She recommended leveraging multilingual abilities to access global opportunities and gain a deeper understanding of diverse cultures. Mastering multiple languages can open doors to international markets and partnerships, significantly enhancing competitiveness in the global economy.

This proficiency not only facilitates better communication but also fosters stronger, more meaningful connections in an increasingly interconnected world.

For example, Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Huawei have thrived by leveraging their multilingual workforces to penetrate global markets. Alibaba’s international e-commerce platform, AliExpress, has gained massive popularity by offering customer support and services in multiple languages, thus attracting customers from over 220 countries and regions. This multilingual approach has been fundamental in breaking language barriers and building trust with international customers.

Professor Ou added that the ability to communicate in multiple languages can significantly enhance young people’s career prospects and business opportunities. Multilingual capabilities not only facilitate better understanding and cooperation across different cultures but also equip students with the tools to tap into new markets and form global partnerships. This, in turn, makes young people much more valuable assets in today’s highly competitive and interconnected world economy.
