Pakistani Delegation Immersed in Chongqing’s Blend of Heritage, Innovation and Urban Renewal

Chongqing - From June 19 to 22, a 16-member delegation of Pakistani journalists, think tank experts, and social media influencers embarked on an immersive journey through Chongqing, uncovering the city's dynamic blend of cultural richness, technological development, and urban revitalization. The visit, aimed at deepening Pakistan-China ties under the Belt and Road Initiative, showcased Chongqings role as a model of Chinese modernization.

Cultural engagement for a cross-cultural dialogue

Chongqing's cultural strategy positions tradition as a dynamic force for deeper preservation and cross-cultural exchange, while integrating modern elements creatively and innovatively. The delegation, during their visit to Jian'ai Zhihui Art Space, observed intangible cultural heritage crafts, such as paper-cutting and guqin music, being reimagined as tools for inclusivity. By training artisans with disabilities and promoting their work in global markets, the center exemplifies how cultural heritage can drive equitable growth.

This model of "living heritage" was further evidenced at the White Crane Ridge in Fuling District, where 1,200-year-old hydrological inscriptions are preserved through cutting-edge engineering, simultaneously presenting a theme resonating with Pakistan's efforts to safeguard Mohenjo-Daro. The site's dual identity, as both a UNESCO-recognized scientific archive and a public education facility, impressed the delegation with its resilience through adaptation.

Zamir Awan, the Founding Chairman of the Global Silk Route Research Alliance, expressed profound admiration for China's efforts in cultural heritage conservation after visiting this museum. He emphasized that China has struck a remarkable balance between economic reforms and heritage protection, demonstrating its commitment to integrating development with cultural preservation.

Based on these rich cultures, the interplay between local identity and global outreach has the potential to be amplified at the Western China International Communication Organization (WCICO), Chongqing's only state-authorized English media center for international discourse. Journalist and influencer Rida Saifee (K21 News) was particularly inspired, stating, "I'd really like to visit here once again and to be the first Pakistani influencer to partner with this organization," eager to amplify Chongqing's stories to her vast audience.

Innovation and technology: potential for Pakistan-Chongqing collaboration

Chongqing's innovation ecosystem offered actionable insights for Pakistan's green transition. At Chongqing Zaisheng Technology Corporation, delegates explored air purification filters and energy-saving glass solutions, which directly address Pakistan’s urban smog and energy deficits. Agricultural tech breakthroughs at the Chongqing Yudongnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences highlighted Chongqing’s rural modernization. Potential cooperation opportunities in this industry were discussed, ranging from Zhacai exports to technological exchanges in sustainable farming.

The transformation of Chongqing from an inland city to a global logistics powerhouse was laid bare at the International Logistics Hub Exhibition Center. Delegates observed how the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (NILSTC), a flagship BRI project, has overcome geographical barriers through innovative infrastructure and policy solutions. This corridor has cemented Chongqing as a pivotal global supply chain node, slashing Asia-Europe transit times by up to 40%.

Minzhucun Community as a successful urban renewal model

The revitalization of Minzhucun Community in Jiulongpo District provided a compelling case study in people-first urban planning. The delegation learned how extensive resident consultation shaped the community's transformation, a model lauded for its unwavering focus on citizen well-being and quality of life, principles deeply relevant to Pakistan's own urban development goals.

Yawar Abbas, from the Associated Press of Pakistan, stated that this marked his first visit to China and inaugural trip to Chongqing. "The city's modernization has far exceeded my expectations," he remarked, describing Chongqing as "deeply impressive with dynamic urban development and cultural vibrancy reflecting China's rapid advancement and commitment to international engagement".

An important value of this visit lies in the concrete examples the delegation can now share with their audiences. Chongqing demonstrates how development can be both rapid and sustainable, both modern and rooted in tradition, which is exactly the balance Pakistan seeks to achieve through its partnership with China.
