The concert will take place on Sunday, 9 August 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Belfast's Lyric Theatre, offering audiences a unique musical journey that bridges Eastern and Western traditions through innovation and cultural dialogue.
Centred around the ancient Chinese instrument, the Guzheng, the concert explores the fusion of Chinese and Irish musical heritage. One of the highlights of the programme is an innovative adaptation combining excerpts from the Chinese classic "Butterfly Lovers" with the traditional Irish tune "The Butterfly." Through the shared symbolism of the butterfly in both cultures, the performance creates a new musical narrative that transcends borders.
Pioneering Cross-Cultural Musical Exploration
"Music is a language that transcends national boundaries," said Wei Deng. "This concert is not only a display of technical skill, but also a live demonstration of overseas Chinese cultural identity, heritage sustainability, and cross-cultural understanding."
Deeply rooted in Northern Ireland's cultural landscape, Wei Deng has actively explored the fusion of the Chinese guzheng with local musical traditions in recent years. Her collaborations include working with Beyond Skin on a Chinese New Year project for the Year of the Tiger, partnering with composers Sid Peacock and Dr Paul O'Hagan to push the boundaries of musical creation, and performing at diverse cultural events including Diwali celebrations by ImageNation NI and Good Friday activities.
Speaking at the launch event, Ms Lili Li, Vice President of the Chinese Welfare Association of Northern Ireland, said: "Wei Deng's music project provides a unique platform for the Northern Irish Chinese community to showcase Chinese culture and has made positive contributions to local multicultural exchange. We are delighted to support such meaningful cross-cultural activities."
Madame Yanhua Wang, Deputy Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Belfast, also expressed support for the concert: "Cultural exchange is a bridge connecting people's hearts. We would like to encourage Wei Deng in her cross-cultural music creations. We hope this concert will further enhance understanding and friendship between the people of our two countries."
