Chongqing - What can rail networks, AI and smart agriculture mean for a remote district’s future? Qianjiang District in southwest China’s Chongqing is betting on these three areas to become a regional hub connecting businesses and communities across neighboring regions from 2026 to 2030.

Journey from mountain isolation to regional connection
Transport and logistics have long been central to Qianjiang’s development. Located in a mountainous area linking Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou, the district sees better connectivity as key to regional cooperation and growth. It plans to build the Qianjiang-Jishou high-speed railway and upgrade National Highway 319 to strengthen transport links across the region.

The district will expand its role as a node on the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, a logistics network linking western China with overseas markets by rail, road and sea.
Plans include a railway container freight system with annual capacity of 4.5 million metric tons and a strategic reserve base for grain, edible oil, coal and emergency supplies. Qianjiang will also develop agricultural markets, an automotive sales and maintenance center, an ASEAN products exhibition center and a cross-border e-commerce cluster.
Linking high-tech industries with regional resources for growth
Luo Cheng, secretary of the Communist Party of China Qianjiang District Committee, said the district will focus on five key areas: advanced materials, local computing capacity, innovation, Wuling Mountains tourism and regional consumption.
To achieve this goal, Qianjiang is promoting a development model of “Qianjiang headquarters plus surrounding-area support.” The district will focus on higher-value industries such as fiberglass composites, magnetic materials and biomedicine, while neighboring areas contribute agricultural products and supporting services.
The strategy also covers regional cooperation in agriculture, tourism and natural resources. Cross-regional platforms will support sericulture, traditional Chinese medicinal materials and high-altitude produce, while tourism routes will connect Wuling Mountain attractions through joint promotion and unified ticketing.
Qianjiang and neighboring areas also plan to combine geological resources, including fish fossils and stromatolites, to seek UNESCO Global Geopark status.

Manufacturing will remain the main economic driver, Deputy District Mayor Zhang Lie said.
Industrial value added from major enterprises rose 7.8% year on year in the first half of 2026, 3.7 percentage points above Chongqing's overall rate.
In advanced materials, Qianjiang will focus on recycling, inorganic materials and automotive power components. It plans annual capacity of 500,000 tons of recycled aluminum and 300,000 tons of recycled copper, while expanding into lightweight structural parts, copper rods and copper foil.

The district will also develop fiberglass and calcium-based materials and attract producers of magnetic components, onboard chargers and electrical converters.
From silkworms to smart farming: a new agriculture push
Agriculture is another pillar. Qianjiang is promoting four "factory-based" industries: silkworm breeding, mushroom cultivation, poultry farming and pig farming.

The projects are expected to raise incomes for about 20,000 farming households. Qianjiang has led Chongqing in cocoon production for 16 consecutive years and has about 23 companies covering mulberry cultivation, silkworm breeding, silk reeling and textile production, with annual output of about 1.4 billion yuan (about 206.9 million U.S. dollars).
Pilot tests of intelligent silkworm breeding have completed 24 rounds, producing silk with a purity score above 94 and a 5A quality grade, Luo said. The district plans to accelerate construction of facilities targeting 500,000 dan of cocoons (about 2500 tons), from July 2027. Officials said the project could support a 10-billion-yuan industrial cluster.
By 2030, Qianjiang aims to raise annual output from food and agricultural processing to more than 14 billion yuan and biomedicine output to over 5 billion yuan.
Computing will provide another growth area. Rather than compete in scale with China's eight national computing hubs, Qianjiang will focus on AI inference computing and disaster-recovery data centers, using its relatively cool climate as an advantage.
The district also plans to improve water, electricity, computing and communications networks, establish a national-level data-labeling pilot zone and develop a computing industry park serving the Wuling Mountain region.
