On March 17, the Global Final of the 2018-2019 Season of the World Electronic Sports Games (WESG) kicked off at the Chongqing Olympic Sports Center. The game used 5G technology to broadcast live for the audience outside, so that e-sports enthusiasts who cannot watch the final inside could still enjoy this immersive viewing experience.

There were also a number of on-site 5G applications available for the public. Meanwhile, the Chongqing Olympic Sports Center also officially declared it to be the first large-scale stadium with full coverage of 5G networks, which is the first of its kind in China.
5G experience
At the site of final, the audience could watch the synchronous broadcasting of the game on the high-definition demonstration screen in the China Telecom (Chongqing) Outfield Exhibition Hall through the 5G networks. “The whole transmission process takes only a few milliseconds through the 5G networks.” Moreover, the official in charge of the China Telecom (Chongqing) Outfield Exhibition Hall said that this would allow e-sports enthusiasts outside the stadium to watch the latest status of the game in real time.
“It will be even possible to watch this kind of e-sports games at home in the future. With a camera placed at the venue, the users can have immersive experience by VR facilities,” said the official in charge of the China Telecom (Chongqing) Outfield Exhibition Hall.
In recent years, Chongqing has successively issued a series of policies to support the industries of Internet and e-sports, attracting plenty of Internet giants and e-sports industry manufacturers to gather in Chongqing. So what will the WESG, which will settle in Chongqing for a long time, and the more intense e-sports competitions bring to this city in the future?
Chongqing has always provided a favorable environment for the development of e-sports, cultivating a number of well-known local e-sports idols such as CQ2000, Alex, Ted, Qin Yuanda and Wings.
In September last year, Ali sports and the People’s Government of Jiulongpo District, Chongqing, officially signed a strategic cooperation agreement. Additionally, they jointly announced the settlement of E-sports Headquarters of Ali sports in Chongqing High-tech Industrial Development Zone and the long-term settlement of WESG in Chongqing.
The long-term settlement of WESG in Chongqing also offers a fantastic opportunity to the People’s Government of Jiulongpo District, Chongqing. Li Hongliang, Deputy Head of Jiulongpo District, said, “The Jiulongpo District will take the long-term settlement of WESG as an opportunity. Moreover, we will comprehensively arrange the layout of the operation and management centers of e-sports competitions, e-sports team clubs, bases of e-sports training and employment at all levels, etc.”
The focuses of the local government sectors are different from the sports sector. Given that the market of e-sports is adolescent and e-consumer groups, they pay more attention to the structural changes that e-sports may bring to urban economy and consumption.
According to the Work Report of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government in 2018, the electronics manufacturing industry has become the first pillar industry in Chongqing. CNG, a well-known market research institution of the game industry in China released the 2017 China Gaming Industry Report. Moreover, it shows that in 2018, the number of users in China’s e-sports industry would reach 430 million, and the market size would exceed RMB 88 billion.
