On March 21, 2019, a car was being driven slowly in a company’s internal road, located in Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing, China. Surprisingly, the driver of this car was in the open laboratory of China Mobile 5G Innovation Center, several kilometers away. This driver, facing several screens, was holding the steering wheel of the remote end, as in a game.

From Chongqing State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, after the preparation for over a year, this lab has opened officially. The open laboratory mainly highlights the technical test, business development, and application and promotion of new technology, product, service, and model of 5G networks. In its exhibition hall, visitors can see a series of technology and application achievements of the previous cooperation.

An application of smart transportation

The “remote drive”, with utilized low latency, ultra-reliable performance, and ultra-high broadband, is a technology application about smart transportation. And through sensors like the camera, it will transmit the information about the car and road conditions to the driver’s end. Based on the information, the driver will control the car from afar, realizing the “Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS)” remote control. People can use this technology while driving in dangerous areas with fire disaster or radiation. It is also available in the sceneries of taking over the temporary control of a car and the mechanical remote control. The future is very promising.

In the exhibition area of intelligent manufacturing, there is a mechanical hand which can play the finger-guessing game. If somebody gesticulates for this game in the inducing area, the mechanical hand will respond instantly. Thus you will never win however hard you have tried. This mechanical hand has combined the technologies of integrated vision sensing, mechanical control, and artificial intelligence.

The exhibition hall of this open laboratory has shown projects, including smart logistics, home appliances, government affairs, and river chief.
