1956 - Shanghai First Medical College (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) moved partially to Chongqing, and established Chongqing Medical College.
1979 - Chongqing Medical College was authorized to confer master's degrees by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee of China. It was among the first group of master-degree-granting institutions in China. It began recruiting master's students in 1979. Chongqing Medical College was listed by Chongqing local government as the first group of Institutions Opening-Up.
1981 - Chongqing Medical College was authorized to confer doctoral degrees by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee of China. It was among the first group of doctoral-degree-granting institutions in China. It began recruiting doctoral students in 1981.
1985 - Chongqing Medical College was renamed Chongqing Medical University (CQMU).
1989 - Internal Medicine (Infectious Diseases) was listed as a National Key Discipline.
1995 - The first Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme for Research (Clinical Medicine) was initiated.
1999 - High-intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) was developed by Prof. Wang Zhibiao and his team at CQMU in 1999. HIFU technology is in line with the trend of minimally invasive and noninvasive medicine. Prof. Zhibiao Wang's team invented and developed a Focused Ultrasound Tumor Therapeutic System with full proprietary intellectual property right. In 2002, HIFU equipment was exported to Oxford University, the first Chinese medical equipment exported to western countries.
2002 - Pediatrics and Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics were listed as National Key Disciplines.
2007 - Neurology was listed as a National Key Discipline. The Jinyun Campus of Chongqing Medical University was completely constructed and put into use.
2012 - CQMU was listed in the first group universities which were supported by the Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in the Central and Western China, the first Pilot Institutions for Outstanding Medical Talents Training, and one of the Chinese Government Scholarship Institutions.
2013 - CQMU was named as a Demonstration Bases for International Education in China.
2015 - The Chongqing Municipal People's Government, the National Health Commission (the formerly National Health and Family Planning Commission) and the Ministry of Education of China started to jointly support CQMU.
2019 - CQMU was approved to establish the National Child Health and Disease Clinical Medical Research Center.
2020 - CQMU was approved to establish the State Key Laboratory of Ultrasound Medical Engineering.
