For modern people, sewing machines were one of the favorite articles of their mothers and grandmothers. In memory, this machine might have magic -with the “der, der” sound, again and again, the children would have brand-new clothes.
The Bayu Folk Museum is located at Bijin Park in Yubei District. Since March 19, it started showcasing the 100 sewing machines, which once witnessed our history and lives. Among the 100 exhibits of 100 brands, there are 79 from China and 21 from the US, UK, Japan, and Germany.
The oldest one is under the American brand of “Willcox & Gibbs”. Manufactured in 1868, it enjoys a history of 150 years.
Chongqing Sewing Machine Factory started producing “Hongyan” sewing machines since 1970.
And the manufacturer of “E’pai” or “Goose” sewing machines is Chongqing Machine Tool Plant.
It is worth noticing that the production period of these exhibits was from the 1860s and 1870s to the 1980s and 1990s, with the time span of over a hundred years.
As for the types, people utilized these sewing machines especially to weave clothes and make shoes, and backpacks. There is a “Hongyan” sewing machine, which is familiar to the old Chongqing people, and even the antique-like one from the US, enjoying a history of 150 years.
