May 28 is the first day of the Belt and Road International Skills Competition (BRISC). In the competing projects held in Chongqing International Expo Center, 698 skillful competitors from 44 countries or regions competed fiercely.

The most physically demanding project is Information Network Cabling, with ten registered participants. Two of them are girls, including Chen Shih-Yu, a 19-year-old female competitor from Singapore.

In this project, she is also the only girl of the seven participants who will also be involved in the 45th WorldSkills Competition to be held in Russia this August.

“I feel very excited to take part in this competition, where I can take the chance to communicate with many excellent opponents. It is also a warm-up for me to participate in the WorldSkills Competition.” Chen Shih-Yu said and added that though she had just engaged in information network cabling for no more than two years, her skill was second to none around Singapore.

“Though males may show a bigger advantage in this project, she is the best in Singapore.” Chen Shih-Yu’s coach told the reporter proudly.

It is worth mentioning that May 28 was her 19th birthday, and her team leader and teammates had prepared a surprise for her.

According to the organizing committee, the leader of the Singapore Team had contacted them behind the back of Chen Shih-Yu and asked them to order a birthday cake. The organizing committee agreed with pleasure.

At about 7:00 that evening, when the staff and volunteers pushed the meal trolley with a birthday cake to the room of Chen Shih-Yu, this girl, just celebrated her 19th birthday, was tickled pink.

In addition, the organizing committee had prepared cakes for all the participants who would celebrate their birthdays during the competition period, hoping that “their experience in Chongqing will be a wonderful memory in the future.”
