A common idea is that traditional carpenters would spend years of practice to become adepts. However, what happened at the venue of Joinery, a competition item of the Belt and Road International Skills Competition (BRISC), may prove you wrong.

On the morning of May 28, as soon as the Joinery competition kicked off, many visitors crowded round to watch the skill contest between players from the UK, Russia, Australia, South Korea, Austria, Serbia, China, and other countries and regions.

Different from traditional joinery competition, the joinery competition in BRISC this time will totally change your views of it

This project requires competitors to use mortises and tenon joints of different types to connect two and more wooden-made parts manually or through the related machines. Afterward, they should make these parts into the articles for doors, windows, stairs, and other parts of buildings.

To fully appraise the hands-on ability, all these preparation tables were placed with tens of apparatuses, namely, graph paper, electric drills, hammers, cutters, wooden mallets, rulers, etc. Though not familiar with those tools, visitors still admired the contestants so much.

As for the competition content, participants need to make a vase-shaped window lattice within the required time. Moreover, they should bring out the best in making fine handwork when referring to the graph paper to make the articles. This project will also appraise their mastering in specific sizes and scales of the works.

The scoring rules of the Joinery project, derived from the 44th and 45th World Skills Competitions, are extensive enough to cover all the key points of the related events around the world and basically keep in line with the required skill level of the world-class event. To fully test competitors’ various techniques in woodworking and elaborate processing, the competition time was also reduced to ten hours.
