On December 6, the Chongqing Education Commission issued the Notice on Issuing the Special Action Plan for the Construction of High-level Undergraduate Education in Chongqing (hereinafter referred to as the “Notice”). In line with the requirements of the Notice, Chongqing will push forward the comprehensive reform on colleges and universities. This will support colleges and universities to take diversified and distinctive developments. In the future, it will build 3 to 5 international universities featuring art and culture. Additionally, Chongqing will breed about 30 municipal specialties in intelligent and big data. In the meantime, the city will also cultivate 350 municipal first-class specialties.

The Chongqing Education Commission will implement 8 actions to improve the quality and standard of talents training. Meanwhile, these actions can also enhance their ability to serve economic and social development. The city will accelerate the renewal and featured development of undergraduate education concepts, and optimize the specialty structure. Moreover, strengthening course and curriculum construction, and exploring the mechanism of collaborative education is the way to go. Enhancing the faulty construction, deeply integrating with information technology, and reinforcing process supervision are also on the way.

Double First-Class for Chongqing's Education

According to the relevant principal of the Chongqing Education Commission, “We will guide the dislocation competition and character development among municipal colleges and universities. We will provide particular support for the construction of first-class disciplines and first-class universities (hereinafter referred to as the “Double First-Class”) in Chongqing University and Southwest University. In the meantime, we will strongly support the municipal colleges and universities and Chongqing Institute of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc., to be designated in the national ‘Double First-Class’ list. Also, we will positively introduce high-quality universities at home and abroad into Chongqing to rapidly advance the talent training ability of higher education in our city.”

Specialty construction is undoubtedly an important part of improving the level of undergraduate education in colleges and universities. For the purpose of building a batch of first-class specialties and supporting the construction of “Double First-Class”, Chongqing will boost orderly the comprehensive reform of colleges and universities. Furthermore, the city will support different types of colleges and universities to carry out diversified, characteristic and high-level development on the grounds of national strategy, regional economic construction, and social development demands, and based on their own strengths.
