According to the Chongqing Municipal Education Commission, three additional disciplines of higher institutions in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality rank among the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) discipline ranking. They are the environment and ecology of Chongqing University, computer science of Southwest University, and immunology of Chongqing Medical University.

Up to now, the number of disciplines in Chongqing listed among the ESI top 1% has increased to 27. These first-class disciplines will contribute to the construction of “Double First-Class” universities in Chongqing.

Launched by the Institute for Scientific Information, a world-renowned academic information publishing institution, in 2001, the ESI discipline ranking is a basic analysis and evaluation tool for measuring scientific research performance and tracking scientific development trends. As an analytical database based on collecting and analyzing over 11,000 academic journals and over 10 million documents, it is one of the globally-recognized most important evaluation indicators for judging the developmental level of disciplines.

“Whether a discipline places in ESI top 1% is one of the significant indicators to decide its entry into the world-class rankings. It is also an important indicator to measure the core competitiveness of a university.” According to the relevant person in charge of the Chongqing Municipal Education Commission, there are currently 8 disciplines of Chongqing University, 7 in Southwest University, 6 in the Army Medical University, 5 in Chongqing Medical University, and 1 in Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications that rank among the top 1% of ESI discipline ranking in Chongqing.
