Wansheng Finds 3,000 Ancient Coins from the Southern Song Dynasty

These ancient coins are different in size and thickness

Recently, constructors have found a number of ancient coins. Coins come from the site of treating slope dangerous rocks. The site locates along S434 in Tianba Village, Guanba Town, Wansheng District. Local archaeological experts said that these coins might come from the Southern Song dynasty.

According to the introduction of Liao Xiaobo, On-Site Principal of Highway Maintenance Station of Chongqing Traffic, “The ancient coins were found in deep underground. There are more than 20 meters from the ground.” On October 26, the staff caught sight of some round coins with the square hole when removing risks. Then they discovered that plenty of old coins among rocks.

Amazing Ancient Coins

There are more than 3,000 ancient coins vary in size and thickness. It seems that they are iron coins, which generally appeared in the Southern Song dynasty, according to the corrosion of degree and form. However, this group of coins might be from Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279 A.D.) or even earlier period. It still needs further textual research on the producing time. Linghu Keqiang, the head of the Museum of Chongqing Wansheng Economic and Technological Development Zone, indicates that the ancient coins can reflect economic development level here at that time. The finding provides important physical evidence for the research on immigrant culture and local socio-economic development.

Linghu Keqiang expressed that archaeologists have completed on-the-spot excavation, exploration, and clean-up. They will conduct rust removal, differentiation & interpretation, classification, as well as weighing then. At last, they will carry out the specialized study and textual research on the historical background.
