Chinese Traditional Paper Cutting Artwork Exhibition Made a Debut Show in Chongqing

On May 23, the Chinese Traditional Paper Cutting Artwork Exhibition opened in the Gallery of Chongqing Federation of Literature. This exhibition showcases 200 pieces of incredible paper cutting artworks, collected from over 100 folk artists around China. They represent the latest features of the paper cutting art in China.

Besides, the organizing unit has received more than 2,000 pieces of paper cutting artworks during the preparatory period, and 200 excellent ones have stood out after several rounds of selections. They are from over 100 folk artists nationwide, representing the latest features of the paper cutting art of China, so that this exhibition is also known as a general portfolio of this folk art in China.

The exhibits all hold distinctive characteristics and different styles. With the subjects covering figures, animals, flowers and birds, folklores, auspicious patterns, some are rough and uninhibited, while some are graceful in meticulous design. The techniques of expression include cutting, carving, tearing, matching, lining, folding, dyeing, etc.

Paper cutting art is very popular among Chinese people, and it is not only a part of the social life of people of all ethnic groups but also plays an essential role in various folk activities. In addition, paper cutting also carries the social values of deepening the cognition, promoting education, ideographical and emotional expression, entertainment, intensifying exchanges, etc. Paper cutting was included in the first batch of China’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006 and the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009.
