Sister Jiang is based on the novel Red Crag, and the script is from the opera of the same name, written by Yan Su, a famous playwright, in 1964. It has been performed for 55 times in places like Chongqing and Sichuan since its premiere in January 2018, attracting an audience of more than 60,000.

“(The) popularity of Sister Jiang can be explained as the emotional resonance felt by the audience — the character echoes their spiritual pursuit. Additionally, the opera is a great Party lesson on faith and core values,” Shen Tiemei said.

Chongqing Sichuan Opera Theater recruited some students majoring in Sichuan Opera to inherit the national treasure better. Shen shouldered the responsibility to train them.

Sister Jiang will have another performance on July 1 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Later, it is going to visit Tianjin and other cities.
