Chongqing Achieved GDP Average Growth of 8.3% in 70 Years

On September 6, Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Statistics (CMBS) released data showing Chongqing’s socio-economic development from the founding of the People’s Republic of China to the end of 2018. Notably, the city has achieved a GDP average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 8.3%.

According to CMBS, in 2018, Chongqing’s GDP achieved 2036.319 billion (2 Trillion) yuan, 1,466 times that of 1949. Its AAGR of per capita GDP reached 7.3%, 758 times that of 1949. Constant optimizing and upgrading of economic and industrial structure and growing balanced economic development have been the highlights of Chongqing over the past 70 years. The ratio of Chongqing’s primary, secondary, and tertiary industries, which was 70.1:19.5:10.4 in 1949, changed to 6.8:40.9:52.3 in 2018. Moreover, the economic structure shows a pattern of steady growth in agriculture, high-end and clustered development of industry and upgrading of the service industry.

On top of that, Chongqing has achieved comprehensive development in such areas as foreign trade, infrastructure, the service of people’s livelihood, and social construction. By the end of 2018, Chongqing had registered a permanent resident population of 31.0179 million, a regional per capita GDP of 65,933 yuan, an urbanization rate of 65.5%, a green coverage rate of built-up areas of 44.42%, and a gross enrollment rate of higher education of 47%. The science and technology R&D spending accounted for 1.95% of GDP.
