Nie Feng, Winner of World-skills Competition: “I Will Train More World Champions for Chongqing”

Nie Feng won the gold medal for Hairdressing of the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in 2015. It was China’s first gold medal in this Competition, and she was also the first world champion from an Asian country in the last 65 years before 2015. On November 7, Nie became one of the first batches of talent included in the Chongqing Professional Talents Plan with the title of Leading Talent of Skills.

The member of the WorldSkills Competition Coach Team said: “It is a great honor. Chongqing helped me succeed, and I want to train more professionals for the city.”

China has finished the 45th WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia, claiming 16 gold medals, 14 silver, five bronze, and 17 excellence awards. Competitors from Chongqing achieved a record performance of four gold medals, four silver, two bronze, and three excellence awards. The gold medal winner for hairdressing Shi Dan is a student of Nie.

The 46th WorldSkills Competition will be held in Shanghai in 2021. Nie is selecting competitors for the next year’s national qualification trial.

“It is the industry’s overall capability that gives us the voice in the world, instead of some champions,” Nie said, and added that she had been sorting her experience in the hairdressing industry and international and domestic competitions, and working with experts and coaches of the Competition to compile textbooks for Chinese students.

The world champion prefers to be an “artisan,” saying: “I want to train a wave of students who enjoy the craftsmanship and can receive worldwide recognition.”

Many countries will issue certifications for hairdressers after they pass rigorous grade examinations. These people then form an association with a standard evaluation system. “Technicians will insistently play their roles only after the industry is stable, and they feel respected. In return, the industry can embrace sustainable development.”
