35 Units Launch the Green Agricultural Development Alliance in Chongqing

Hosted and initiated by Southwest University, the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) Green Agricultural Development Summit Forum was held in Beibei District on November 30. Twenty-nine universities and research institutes, and six regional governments in the Yangtze River basin jointly established the alliance. The alliance seeks to address significant strategic and critical technical issues in the research and application of YREB’s green agricultural development.

The Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) Green Agricultural Development Summit Forum was held in Beibei District Chongqing on Nov 30.

YREB incorporates 11 provinces (municipalities), including Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, with an area of about 2.05 million square kilometers, accounting for 21.4% of the country’s total area. Its population and GDP both exceed 40% of the total amount, and its agricultural acreage accounts for about 41% of the total. With a dense population and a high degree of agricultural intensification, it is hailed as one of the vital agrarian production bases in China.

At the signing ceremony, 35 alliance member units signed the alliance agreement and the cooperation framework agreement on green agricultural development between universities and local governments.

“Southwest University established the YREB Green Agricultural Development Research Center in May this year.” Li Xufeng, Secretary of the CPC Committee of Southwest University, said that the alliance was aimed at gathering advantageous scientific research forces and technological resources, in a bid to tackle the significant strategic and critical technical problems in the research and application of YREB’s green agricultural development. In this manner, it would further serve the country’s primary strategic needs, carry out collaborative innovation and demonstration of green agriculture research, facilitate the implementation of rural revitalization strategy, and propel green agricultural development in YREB.

At the Forum, academicians, and experts from Qinghai University, Ningbo University, Guizhou University, and other universities shared their views on such issues as modern agricultural complexes and green production of vegetables.
