Chongqing COVID-19 Update: 250 Confirmed Cases Hospitalized, 14th Municipal Medical Team in Hubei Province

Chongqing- As of 24:00 local time on February 21, Chongqing had reported 250 confirmed cases currently hospitalized (25 in severe condition and 10 in critical condition), six deaths, and 316 discharged patients after recovery, according to the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission Saturday. All those cases had totaled 572 confirmed cases infected by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as of the end of Friday in Chongqing.

A total of 22,945 people who had close contacts with COVID-19 patients have been traced, 21,251 people have been released from medical observations, and 1,694 people are under medical observations.

The fourteenth Chongqing municipal medical team of 173 members to assist Hubei Province departed Friday, bringing the total number of medical team members excluding military staff to 1,378.

Previous measures show effective

Experts believe that the previous prevention and control measures in Chongqing have shown effects on identifying the source of infection as early as possible and containing the epidemic spread in the community.

According to Friday’s press conference on epidemic prevention and control, the daily newly confirmed cases in Chongqing has shown a downward trend starting from February 11. Moreover, the daily new confirmed infections have dropped to single digits for 7 consecutive days since February 14. Apart from that, The number of existing suspected cases and hospitalized patients both decline. The total of discharged patients after recovering from COVID-19 outnumbers hospitalized cases.

At present, Chongqing has entered a new stage of focusing on epidemic prevention and control as well as economic and social development.  Enterprises are gradually resuming production and work, and human mobility increases as the rising number of people returning to Chongqing from outside. So there is a higher risk of imported cases. All enterprises and institutions must continue to do a good job of managing key places such as construction sites, canteens, and dormitories, checking body temperature, mask-wearing, hands-washing, and eating meals separately.

Chongqing Customs' efforts to prevent the cross-border spread of COVID-19

Chongqing Customs has spared every effort to prevent and control of COVID-19 in avoidance of epidemic cross-border spread. From January 22 to February 19, Chongqing Customs conducted a total of 106,300 quarantines and inspections, of which 49,400 outbound and 56,900 inbound. 

Since January 25 when the General Administration of Customs has restarted the health declaration card system for entry and exit, Chongqing Customs has accepted 44,600 passenger health declarations.

Li Yu, deputy director of Chongqing Customs, briefed on the 11 measures to support the resumption of work and production of foreign trade enterprises. The measures involve six aspects, including fast customs clearance, tax payment, and helping to the expansion of import and export.

Having known 15 account books of 13 enterprises approaching the write-off deadline, Chongqing Customs contacted the 13 enterprises in Lianglu-Cuntan Free Trade Port Area, Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Area, and Jiangjin Comprehensive Bonded Area, and helped them to complete the extension procedures to ensure their normal operations.

A total of 20,659 people had been discharged from the hospital after recovery. By the end of Friday, 68 confirmed cases including two deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 10 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 26 in Taiwan including one death. Six patients in Hong Kong, six in Macao and two in Taiwan have been discharged from hospital after recovery.

According to Xinhua news, Chinese researchers have released the first pathology report on the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), analyzing its impact on a patient's lungs, liver and heart by studying the biopsy samples at autopsy. The report agreed that lymphopenia, as a common feature in the COVID-19 patients, might be a critical factor associated with disease severity and mortality. It also suggested that the timely and appropriate use of corticosteroids together with ventilator support should be considered for severe patients to prevent ARDS development.
