Chongqing COVID-19 Update: 80 Confirmed Cases Hospitalized, Supplies from 46 Countries Arrive in China

  • The overall confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 80,270 by the end of March 3. A total of 2,981 people had died of COVID-19, and altogether 49,856 people had been discharged from hospital after recovery.

  • As of March 2, 62 countries and seven international organizations have pledged epidemic prevention and control supplies to China. Supplies from 46 countries and six international organizations have arrived in China.

Chongqing- As of 24:00 local time on March 3, Chongqing had reported 80 confirmed cases currently hospitalized (five in severe condition and two in critical condition), six deaths, and 490 discharged patients after recovery, according to the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission Wednesday. All those cases had totaled 576 confirmed cases infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as of the end of Tuesday in Chongqing.

Tuesday had no newly confirmed case in Chongqing for the eighth consecutive day, and 21 more patients recovered and discharged from the hospital. A total of 23,602 people who had close contacts with COVID-19 patients have been traced, 23,288 people have been released from medical observations, and 314 people are under medical observations.

Chongqing medical teams involved in 67.23% severe treatment in Hubei

According to Tuesday's press conference on COVID-19, the proportion of Chongqing municipal medical teams involving in severe treatment in Hubei Province has accounted for 67.23%. The first medical team to assist Hubei, the epicenter of COVID-19, departed on January 26, and a total of 18 batches of 1,636 members had arrived there as of Tuesday. Among them, 812 members are in Xiaogan, which receives pairing assistance from Chongqing. The rest of the medical members are in Wuhan, Jingmen, and Tianman.

In addition to doctors and nurses, the team members also have specialized personnel for epidemiological investigations and laboratory testing.  Up to now, Chongqing has allocated 244,400 items of medical supplies to those members and 124,100 items of living necessities. It has also provided Xiaogan with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and other key equipment for treating critically ill patients.

Plasma collected from seven recovered patients for clinical treatment

As of Tuesday, Chongqing has 174 fever clinics, 48 ​​district- or county-designated hospitals, and four centralized treatment hospitals. It has also established an operating system for fever clinic screening, isolated hospital diagnosis and treatment of suspected cases, and centralized treatment of confirmed cases. The patient admission rate was 100%.

Plasma was collected from seven recovered patients for clinical treatment in critically ill patients. "According to the specific condition of each patient, we adhere to the combined diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine," said Zhou Lin, deputy director of the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission. Along with a multi-disciplinary expert team, we carry out multi-disciplinary individualized diagnosis and treatment, and develop an optimal treatment plan for one patient."

Supplies from 46 countries and six international organizations arrive in China

At the regular press conference on March 3, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, "According to what we learned through diplomatic channels, as of March 2, 62 countries and seven international organizations have pledged epidemic prevention and control supplies to China." He continued to elaborate, "To be specific, supplies from 46 countries and six international organizations have arrived in China. Sixteen countries and one international organization announced they would provide prevention and control supplies. In addition, 12 countries and two international organizations have provided or announced they would provide food, cash, and other forms of material support to China."

China will never forget the sincere and friendly assistance from the international community and appreciated that. The country has full confidence and capability in winning this battle against the virus.

In addition, China has "provided testing reagents to Pakistan, Japan, the AU, among others and shared diagnostic and therapeutic solutions with many countries." Moreover, "the Red Cross Society of China and many Chinese enterprises delivered reagents to Iran and African countries. We also sent a volunteer expert team to Iran," said the spokesperson.

By the end of Tuesday, 100 confirmed cases, including two deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), ten confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 42 in Taiwan, including one death. Thirty-seven patients in Hong Kong, nine in Macao, and 12 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospital after recovery.

WHO chief calls on manufacturers to urgently increase production

At the media briefing on COVID-19 on Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus summarized, "COVID-19 spreads less efficiently than flu, transmission does not appear to be driven by people who are not sick, it causes more severe illness than flu, there are not yet any vaccines or therapeutics, and it can be contained." He added, "That's why WHO recommends a comprehensive approach to contain COVID-19."

Apart from that, according to WHO's estimation, the supplies for personal protective equipment need to be increased by 40%. The WHO chief continued to "call on manufacturers to increase production to meet this demand and guarantee supplies urgently." "We have called on governments to develop incentives for manufacturers to ramp up production."

He concluded, "It requires all of us working together to ensure all countries can protect the people who protect the rest of us."
