Chongqing COVID-19 Update: No New Confirmed Case in 9 Days, Two Antibody Testing Kits Developed in Chongqing for Clinical Use

  • The overall confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 80,409 by the end of March 4. A total of 3,012 people had died of COVID-19, and altogether 52,045 people had been discharged from hospital after recovery.

Chongqing - As of 24:00 local time on March 4, Chongqing had reported 68 confirmed cases currently hospitalized (three in severe condition and two in critical condition), six deaths, and 502 discharged patients after recovery, according to the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission Thursday. All those cases had totaled 576 confirmed cases infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as of the end of Wednesday in Chongqing.

Wednesday had no newly confirmed case in Chongqing for the ninth consecutive day, and 12 more patients recovered and discharged from the hospital. A total of 23,612people who had close contacts with COVID-19 patients have been traced, 23,318 people have been released from medical observation, and 294 people are under medical observation.

Two antibody testing kits put into clinical use

Chen Jun, Deputy Director of the Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau, reported on Tuesday that since the epidemic outbreak, Chongqing had made every effort to advance scientific research on the prevention and control. Nine scientific research results have been directly used for clinical diagnosis and treatment and recovery.  Among them, two IgM/IgG antibody testing kits, independently researched and developed in Chongqing, China, were approved by the National Medical Products Administration for marketing and were officially put into clinical use.

As of February 26, the antibody kit had completed a total of 13,532 sample tests in Chongqing, Hubei and other places, of which 1,362 were confirmed with COVID-19. So far, Chongqing has assembled 500,000 antibody detection kits and put them on the market. 

Moreover, the "mobile CT examination cabin" will be officially put into production, which can be used for the early diagnosis of patients infected with COVID-19 and reduce cross-infection of medical staff.

Two health service teams set up

According to Wednesday's press conference on COVID-19, Chongqing's health system has set up two service teams to provide health services for enterprises and migrant workers to resume production and work.  One team offers enterprises resuming operation technical services in terms of epidemic prevention and control. The other provides health monitoring services for migrant workers.

Two TCM preparations developed for the treatment of COVID-19

In the clinical diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been applied in 92.36% of infections, and 411 patients recovered and discharged from the hospital after taking TCM-involved treatment. Chongqing has successfully developed two TCM preparations for the treatment of COVID-19.

The overall confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 80,409 by the end of Wednesday, and 3,012 people had died of the disease, according to the National Health Commission (NHC) Thursday. A total of 52,045 people had been discharged from the hospital after recovery. By the end of Wednesday, 104 confirmed cases, including two deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), ten confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 42 in Taiwan, including one death. Forty-three patients in Hong Kong, nine in Macao, and 12 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospital after recovery.

At the regular press conference on March 4, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, "It is highly irresponsible for some media to dub it 'China virus." "First, no conclusion has been reached yet on the origin of the virus, as relevant tracing work is still underway," he noted and added, "Second, we should all say no to 'information virus' and 'political virus.'" At Wednesday's press conference, the spokesperson also said, "China has been closely following the global footprint of COVID-19. We have been strengthening international cooperation in this area with the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity in mind and an open, transparent, and responsible attitude."

At the media briefing on COVID-19 on Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the report of the WHO-China Joint Mission "calls for all countries to educate their populations, to expand surveillance, to find, isolate and care for every case, to trace every contact, and to take an all-of-government and all-of-society approach."
