COVID-19 Update: China Goes All-Out with Efforts to Protect Students Studying Abroad

  • There were 823,626 confirmed cases (72,736 new) globally, and 40,598 people (4,193 new) have lost their lives by 10:00 CET April 1, according to the daily COVID-19 situation report released by the World Health Organization.

In addition, at Wednesday's regular press conference, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said, Recently, due to the spread of the pandemic, international passenger flights have been scaled down sharply, and some Chinese students studying abroad run into difficulties on their way back home." The Foreign Ministry is actively coordinating with the Civil Aviation Administration and other departments to bring home students in need by extra flight April 2.

Xinhua reported that Vice Minister of Education Tian Xuejun said Thursday that the ministry has taken all-out efforts to safeguard the health and safety of overseas Chinese students amid the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. A prevention and control guideline on COVID-19 was compiled for the students, and multiple lectures by renowned experts have also been held to offer more guidance on epidemic prevention. Chinese embassies and consulates have distributed epidemic prevention materials including masks and "health kits" to overseas students in a timely manner, Tian said, adding that more support for those in straits as well as consular protection is also available.

Three new countries/territories/areas reported cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours: Botswana, Burundi, and Sierra Leone.
At the media briefing on COVID-19 on April 1, the WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “Over the past 5 weeks, we have witnessed a near exponential growth in the number of new cases, reaching almost every country, territory, and area.” He also added, “The number of deaths has more than doubled in the past week. In the next few days, we will reach 1 million confirmed cases and 50 thousand deaths.”

The Chinese mainland reported 35 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, according to the National Health Commission (NHC) April 2. And all of them were imported cases, bringing the total number of its kind to 841. Also, on Wednesday, 55 new asymptomatic COVID-19 cases were reported on the mainland, while nine were confirmed of being infected with the virus, and 338 were discharged from medical observation, according to the NHC. A total of 1,075 asymptomatic-infected patients were still under medical observation. The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 81,589 by the end of Wednesday, including 1,863 patients who were still being treated, altogether 76,408 patients who had been discharged after recovery, and 3,318 people who died of the disease. By Wednesday, 765 confirmed cases, including four deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 41 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 329 in Taiwan, including five deaths. A total of 147 patients in Hong Kong, ten in Macao, and 45 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
