Two New Additions to Chongqing’s List of National Industrial Heritage Sites

Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the list of the fourth batch of national industrial heritage sites. Notably, two from Chongqing were selected, i.e., the former site of the Ordnance Bureau No.1 Arsenal in Jiulongpo District and the Shizitan Cascade Hydropower Station in Changshou District. This has increased Chongqing's national industrial heritage sites to five.

The Ordnance Bureau No.1 Arsenal's former site has witnessed how China's national ordnance industry has overcome all the hardships and gotten to where it is today. Now, there are 51 production holes built during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in existence, and more than half have been remodeled and built into ten theme museums. Chongqing Jianchuan Museum is right one of them that displays diverse historical relics from that period and is a good place to experience the great spirit of resisting aggression.

Built from 1954 to 1957, Shizitan Hydropower Station is the largest construction project among the first batch of hydropower stations in China's First Five-year Plan. It is also the first basin-wide cascade hydropower development project designed and constructed independently by China. Currently, the hydropower station is still in normal and safe operation.

The other three national industrial heritage sites in Chongqing are the Section Steel Plant of Chongqing Iron and Steel (Group) in Dadukou District, the 816 Underground Nuclear Project in Fuling, and the Chongqing Changfeng Chemical Plant in Changshou District. Among them, the Section Steel Plant and the 816 Underground Nuclear Project, based on the original industrial heritage, have been renovated and built into the Chongqing Industrial and Cultural Expo Park and the 816 Underground Nuclear Engineering Scenic Spot, becoming the representatives of Chongqing's industrial, cultural heritage.
