120 Maps Showing Magnificent Revolutionary History of Chongqing

On December 7, 2021, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the Atlas of Chongqing Revolutionary History and Culture was released. It was jointly compiled by the Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources and the Party History Research Office of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee.

The Atlas is the first one of its kind in Chongqing to show the development and growth of the CPC in Bayu. The compilation of this academic monograph involves authoritative experts from various fields, including Party history research, history research, culture research, cartography, museology, archival science, etc.

120 maps completed in over two years

The year 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC To reflect on the past, recall the revolutionary martyrs and stay true to the original aspiration and founding mission, the editorial office of the Atlas has made great efforts to collect, sort out and study revolutionary history materials of Chongqing. It endeavors to use maps to display the major revolutionary historical events in Bayu in modern times and commemorate the martyrs who struggled untiringly and gave up their lives heroically for national independence, people's liberation, and the founding of a new China.

Covering more than 370 pictures with captions of over 110,000 words, the 120 maps in the Atlas is related to the history from the 1860s to 1949. With attractive photographs and their accompanying comments, the maps objectively present the evolution of the revolutionary history, the major revolutionary events that occurred, and the revolutionary historical memories left behind in Chongqing since modern times. It takes two and a half years to complete the Atlas, from preliminary investigation, project approval, and research to its release.

Serving as a map-based tool, Chongqing's residents can understand revolutionary and Party history more easily.

"Chongqing elements" running through the Atlas

The cover of the Atlas is red. It depicts the great struggle in Chongqing's revolution from the beginning to the final victory with a picture of "the army led by Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping marching into the southwest," which marks the revolutionary triumph, as the background, together with several landmark sites in the revolutionary history. The design of the pictures is based on cultural symbols with the characteristics of Chongqing's revolutionary history, including Chaotianmen, the former site of the Executive Committee of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee, the former site of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee (former residence of Zhou Gongzhi), Hongyancun Community, Gele Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery, People's Liberation Monument, etc. With the integration of characteristics of Chongqing's revolutionary historical process, the contents of the Atlas strike deep roots in Bayu.

As the Atlas has been published, Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, the Party History Research Office of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee, and the Chongqing Survey Institute will develop more revolutionary/Party history-themed products suitable for the public based on the existing revolutionary history and culture maps. They strive to help all cadres and the masses in Chongqing to study the Party's history, understand its theories, do practical work and make new advances, and understand the truth, boost self-confidence, advocate ethics and get diligent in action by studying history, thus furthering Party history learning and education throughout the city.
