Chongqing- Figure skating is one of the most iconic sports to have graced the Winter Olympics. You could argue the graceful competition is synonymous with the Games themselves, as it's the oldest sport on the Winter program. In Chinese, figure skating is called "花样滑冰" (Huā-yàng huá-bīng).
The sport has evolved from a way to move around on ice into an elegant mix of art and physical performance. Figure skating was first contested at the 1908 London Summer Games and became a permanent fixture of the Winter Olympics in 1924 at Chamonix, France.
There are five events at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the figure skating competition - men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, ice dances, and a team event.
So far, the United States has been the most successful nation in figure skating at the Winter Olympics, winning a total of 51 medals with 15 golds.
