China’s E-Bike Revolution | Alex in the City

In Episode 6 of Alex In The City, "China's E-Bike Revolution," I share my experience of hopping on the electric-bike craze. So what is an e-bike? Is it hard to buy one as a foreigner? How much does it cost? What are the advantages? Is this the future for keeping the planet green? Let's find out as we go on this e-bike adventure together.

It's not quite as dramatic as the buses, but China has more than 80% of the world's e-bikes. Last year China saw some 250 million on the streets, and it's expected to add 30 million more this year. By contrast, the rest of the world would buy fewer than 5 million e-bikes as of 2018, stated Jeremy Williams of EarthBound Report.

As fuel prices continue to skyrocket around the globe, the future looks bright for the e-bike business. E-bikes come in all shapes and sizes, and some bikes are designed for cities with challenging terrain. The number of electric-bike makers in China has exploded. Around 51,600 e-bike manufacturers are now registered in China in 2020, up 83% from 2019, government data show. And 223,000 companies were in businesses related to the electric-bike industry as of February. Future innovation in the e-bike sector doesn't look like it's slowing down soon. Maybe this is Tesla's next market to capture.

Editor's Note

My name is Alex, and I have recently moved to Chongqing, China. I was born in Canada, a vast country with a population similar to the megacity of Chongqing, and I have always been interested in China. Some people might think that a vlogger is just a person talking about themselves, and maybe that's how it was many years ago, but some vloggers create educational content, and others talk about their political views or experiences. I try to inspire and motivate people to change their perceptions about China.

I will not only show you China, but I will show you my accomplishments and my struggles. Join me as we explore China together.
