The 14th National People's Congress, China's national legislature, opened its first session Sunday morning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. During its news conference on Saturday, Wang Chao, the spokesperson for the first session of the 14th National People's Congress, briefed the press on the session.

The buzzword of the day is Whole-Process People's Democracy.

Deputies to the National People's Congress are broadly representative and are a good practice of China's whole-process democracy. The deputies come from diversified districts, sectors, and ethnic groups of the nation, and people from the grassroots take a great share of all-level NPC deputies.

Among 2,977 deputies to the 14th NPC, 442 are from ethnic minority groups and 42 are returning overseas Chinese. Also, the 14th NPC has 790 female deputies, accounting for 26.54 percent of the total and 497 deputies are front-line workers and farmers. Constitution has been enhanced to allow greater participation of people in legislation. This year's NPC will build on a process made to advance “whole-process people's democracy”.
