Chongqing - The skyline and architecture of Chongqing rival the most spectacular worldwide, augmented only more greatly by the dramatic view of mighty rivers flowing between mountains and past steep riverbanks running for miles along the built-up shores.

However, the unsuspecting visitor may be unaware that many iconic structures in this international metropolis saw the deep involvement of British architectural firms in the design stage, who successfully enhanced the construction projects with innovative concepts which incorporate aesthetic value, green features, and the integration of mass transit in order to drive the revitalization of former rustbelt sites.

In this unique five-part video series produced in collaboration with the UK Consulate General in Chongqing, we share the inside story behind some of the most iconic buildings that grace the cityscape and how top British architectural firms played a vital role in their popular and commercial success thanks to their creative designs and pioneering concepts.

Jiangbeizui International Finance Center

Chongqing International Finance Square (IFS) is a luxury commercial mall and hotel complex standing on a complicated topography in the Jiangbeizui CBD. Inside, there’s a great variety of shopping, catering, and entertainment options, with many top international brands, delicacies from countries worldwide, a full-size ice-skating rink, and quality supermarkets, cinemas, and health clubs, meaning that people can savor the international high life without leaving the city.

The British architectural firm Benoy was involved in the overall planning of IFS and provided services for architecture and interior design, which has upgraded the cityscape, and enhanced the vitality and quality of living of this quarter, which had amassed 1.8 trillion yuan in financial assets by 2020, two decades after urban renewal was first undertaken in this part of Chongqing.

Benoy has introduced their leading commercial designs into Chongqing based on practical experience worldwide, such as their expertise in TOD projects gained through Hong Kong Elements and Singapore ION Orchard and concepts in three-dimensional city planning seen through Shanghai IAPM and London Westfield.
